Where the smart features actually pay off
Three uses justify Wi-Fi on an AC. Pre-cooling: start the unit from your phone 20 minutes before you get home instead of running it all day or walking into a hot room. Scheduling and geofencing: the unit runs less when nobody is there — the one feature that measurably lowers a bill, and it matters most on fixed-speed units that otherwise blast at full power. Remote check: confirming the AC is off from the airport is worth more than it sounds. What Wi-Fi does not do is make a unit more efficient while it runs — that comes from the compressor and the CEER rating, which is why the app is a bigger deal on a budget fixed-speed unit than on an inverter. The smart-plug question
A common workaround: put a dumb AC on a smart plug. It does not do what people hope. Cutting power to a running compressor and restoring it repeatedly stresses the compressor and can trip it, and most units do not resume their last mode after a power cut — so “turn on at 5pm” often just powers up a unit that then sits idle. A smart plug is fine as an energy monitor or an emergency kill switch; it is not a control method.
